Practicing yoga is one of the ways I take care of myself. Ever heard the phrase self care? I predict you’ll be hearing a lot more about it.
What is it, exactly?
Self care is “being aware of a wide range of needs and deliberately taking action to support [your] own well-being.” So says Dr. Kristen Lee Costa, a behavioral science researcher at Northeastern University.
I like to think of self care in contrast to physician care. There are times when I need to rely on a doctor. Setting a broken bone, for instance. And there are instances when I can rely on myself. Say, choosing to get enough sleep at night. Both kinds of care are valuable.
What do YOU think are the ingredients of your own well-being? An annual seaside vacation on the Outer Banks? Some time spent outdoors each day? Regular chats with friends?
